Rachmaninoff / Karen Shaw, 1977: Étude-Tableaux Op. 33 No. 4 in D Minor - MHS 3671
Karen Shaw (1940-2019) joined the Jacobs School of Music faculty at Indiana University in 1968, serving as the chair of the Piano Department from 1977-82 and subsequently for another 4 years. A brilliant pianist, Shaw was widely acclaimed and distinguished herself with performances as recitalist and soloist across the United States, Europe, Canada, and the Far East. Her first New York appearance was as winner of the Concert Artists Guild Award, which prompted unusually high praise from The New York Times critic Donal Henahan. Her debuts in London and Berlin were received with equal praise and enthusiasm. In a series of concerts at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times praised her as a "persuasive interpreter of Romantic music." Among her numerous pupils are noted national and international performers as well as successful teachers at every level.

    Shaw has an unusually intuitive feel and sharp insight into the works of Rachmaninoff. She has certainly earned my utmost respect in her choice of which harmonies and voices to bring to the fore. Her dynamics are brilliant as is her flawless technique!

    Of course, each musical artist invests the piece with their thoughts snd feelings. Having said that ... Ashkenazi and Ruth Laredo present outstanding performances of these etudes as well as Ms. Shaw. Artistic talent os not lacking in the piano world.

    Impressive! Harmonious, deep, meditative. Nothing to say... But my opinion is that Glenn Gould is not interpreting Bach, but what he imagines Bach to be. This is not a Bach piece. It's a creation of Glenn Gould. Bach himself, if he heard it, would not recognize it.

    • @davidhertzberg
      @davidhertzberg День тому

      Thanks... I'm having a hard time understanding what you are trying to convey. "This is not a Bach piece." The recording is by Glenn Gould, certainly; aren't all interpretations creations of the artist? And Bach would not recognize it? Why is that, because there are some improvisatory elements in Gould's rendition?

    • @redcardinal9741
      @redcardinal9741 13 годин тому

      @@davidhertzberg When the artist paints a picture, the brush follows the movements of his hand exactly. The brush never deviates from what the painter intends to create. The brush does not improvise, it just executes everything faithfully. Glenn Gould sins by expressing his feelings and emotions when he interprets this piece by Bach. Originality becomes distortion. Bach must remain Bach. It's got his stamp on all the music he's created, and it should stay that way. By the way, I go back to the first picture with the painter. When the painting is finished, only the painting has value. The brush is thrown..

    • @davidhertzberg
      @davidhertzberg 10 годин тому

      @@redcardinal9741 Ok, yes, that makes sense. I have heard only one artist -- Helmut Walcha -- play Bach without expressing his own feelings or emotions. There are some others who come close. Having said that, Bach does not give much instruction in his music. So naturally musicians are free to infuse the music as they wish. I suspect Bach would have approved. :)

    Soon after Chopin composed and first played, his wildly popular pieces became vehicles for performers from widely different schools: the flamboyant Liszt, the mystical Pachmann, the “reformer” Arthur Rubinstein and on and on. What Novaes brought was utter naturalness. Not mindless singing - not with that probing left hand - but the directness and pure magic that Sand and Delacroix must have heard from their friend. Guiomar’s magic was recognized by Debussy and others as soon as the adolescent applied to the Paris Conservatoire and she never lost it though Novaes could dry up in the studio. Not here. Thanks for sharing.
